More Than Tired: Living With Chronic Illness Fatigue

Chronic illness fatigue is not the same as a healthy person just being tired. When a healthy person is tired, there's usually a reason. Maybe they didn't sleep enough, or they worked really hard. Maybe they were stressed. When they rest, they sleep and take a day off to slow down and recharge, which then makes the tiredness fade for them.
For people living with chronic illness, the fatigue is constant. It's there when we wake up, it's there all day, and it's there before we go to bed. It doesn't matter how much we sleep, eat, or rest. No matter what we do, we are never going to feel refreshed.
To grasp the idea of the feeling, imagine having weights strapped to your body at all times or dragging your body through wet concrete. Every movement is going to cost more, like standing, talking, thinking, or showering. All these things that seem small take true, real effort, and just existing feels heavy.
We live our lives as if our battery will never charge past low. Every decision is made with us running on empty. Pushing through can also lead to real consequences. This fatigue is not laziness, it's not a lack of motivation, and it's not something you can power through with just willpower. It's full-body exhaustion caused by real illness.
At Radiant Rheumatology, we believe patient voices matter. “Living Radiantly: Patient Perspectives” is a space for individuals living with autoimmune disease, chronic illness, POTS, arthritis, and related conditions to share their real experiences in their own words. If you are a patient in Clermont, Florida or the surrounding South Lake County areas and would like to contribute a story, insight, or personal perspective, we welcome you to reach out. Anonymous submissions are always welcome. Sometimes the most powerful reminder that we are not alone comes from hearing someone else say, “I feel that too.”
