POTS and Sleep Problems: When Rest Doesn’t Feel Restorative

“Just rest and sleep till you feel better!” is what most will say to POTS patients. Although many of us can’t escape our symptoms even in our sleep.

POTS patients report significantly more sleep problems than healthy controls like; inadequate sleep, sleep disturbance, fatigue, shortness of breath with sleep, tight feeling in chest, headache with sleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness. The sleep problems contribute severely to diminished quality of life.

Although many POTS patients report major sleep issues, we’ve yet to find a reason or ways to help these symptoms.

The above was submitted by one of our patients to be shared in our Patient Perspectives series. We understand. For many people living with POTS, sleep can become frustrating and emotionally exhausting. Even after a full night in bed, the body may still feel depleted, foggy, heavy, or overstimulated. Some patients describe feeling as though their nervous system never fully “powers down,” making true restorative rest difficult to achieve.

This can also create a difficult cycle. Poor sleep can worsen fatigue, dizziness, headaches, brain fog, and symptom flares during the day. Then, increased symptoms can make it even harder to sleep well the following night.

At Radiant Rheumatology, we understand how discouraging this can feel. Sleep struggles in chronic illness are often invisible to others. Many patients hear advice like “just get more sleep” without realizing that sleep itself may be part of the condition they are battling.

While researchers continue learning more about the relationship between POTS, autonomic dysfunction, and sleep disturbances, one thing remains clear: these symptoms are real, valid, and impactful. Patients deserve to be heard, supported, and taken seriously when discussing how profoundly exhaustion affects their daily lives.

Living with chronic illness is not simply about getting more rest. Sometimes it is about learning how to navigate a body that does not always recharge the way others expect it to.

At Radiant Rheumatology, we believe patient voices matter. “Living Radiantly: Patient Perspectives” is a space for individuals living with autoimmune disease, chronic illness, POTS, arthritis, and related conditions to share their real experiences in their own words. If you are a patient in Clermont, Florida or the surrounding South Lake County areas and would like to contribute a story, insight, or personal perspective, we welcome you to reach out. Anonymous submissions are always welcome. Sometimes the most powerful reminder that we are not alone comes from hearing someone else say, “I feel that too.”
